Rummy Rules: How to Play 13-Card Indian Rummy

The objective in one sentence

Arrange all 13 cards into valid groups, including at least two sequences and at least one pure sequence, then make a valid declaration before the other players.

Set up the table

Indian Rummy is commonly played by two to six players. The number of decks varies with player count and house rules. Each player receives 13 cards; the remaining cards form a closed draw pile, while one face-up card begins the open discard pile. A rank is selected as the wild joker for that deal.

Follow every turn

Start a turn by drawing one card from the closed pile or the top of the open pile. You now hold 14 cards. Organise possible sequences and sets, then discard one card so your hand returns to 13. Play continues until someone submits a complete hand.

Build the two required sequences

A sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. At least one must be pure: no joker may substitute for a missing card. The second sequence may be pure or impure. For example, 4♥–5♥–6♥ is pure; 9♣–Joker–J♣ is impure when the joker replaces 10♣.

Use sets for remaining cards

A set normally contains three or four cards of the same rank in different suits, such as 8♣–8♦–8♥. A repeated card of the same suit does not create a natural set. Jokers may support sets under common rules.

Declare only after a five-part check

Count all 13 cards. Confirm at least two sequences. Confirm one sequence is pure. Check every set for equal rank and different suits. Ensure no card is left outside a group. A fast declaration is worthless if one group is invalid.
